Healthcare Recruitment Checklist for Canadian Employers

Healthcare recruitment works best when candidates receive clear information, timely communication and a realistic picture of the role.

Define the need

Document required credentials, genuine must-have experience, scope, schedule, location, reporting structure and target start date. Separate essentials from preferences.

Write a transparent posting

Include the compensation model or range where permitted, employment status, hours, call, benefits, incentives, licensing requirements, relocation support and community context. Be honest about workload and staffing challenges.

Make the process responsive

Assign ownership for each stage, acknowledge applications, schedule interviews promptly and explain next steps. Coordinate clinical leadership, human resources, credentialing, immigration and community partners.

Assess mutual fit

Use consistent job-related questions and leave time for candidate questions. Arrange conversations with future colleagues and provide a community visit or detailed virtual orientation for relocating candidates.

Turn recruitment into retention

Set realistic expectations, prepare onboarding timelines, assign a mentor and check in regularly. Track why candidates withdraw and employees leave, then use that evidence to improve future recruitment.
