Internationally educated healthcare professionals are an important part of Canada’s workforce, but routes to practice differ by profession and province. Licensing and immigration are separate processes.

Identify the correct regulator

Most regulated health professions are overseen by a provincial or territorial body. Start with the regulator for your profession where you intend to work. Review current requirements for education, language proficiency, examinations, recent practice, checks, liability coverage and supervised practice.

Organize your documents

You may need identity documents, diplomas, transcripts, internship records, course information, certificates of professional standing, employment verification and translations. Some must be sent directly by the issuing institution.

Plan licensing and immigration together

A job offer does not automatically grant registration, and registration eligibility does not automatically authorize work in Canada. Map both processes using official regulatory and government sources.

Ask employers specific questions

Confirm whether the role requires full registration, whether a supervised or provisional route exists, and what support is offered. Get all commitments in writing.
